Pymoor Show 2010

The 12th Show Day dawned to blue, almost cloudless sky which had the sun warming the backs of the Show Committee and some welcome volunteer helpers as they went about their tasks, putting the final touches to the site by setting out and testing generators, opening up the marquees and checking that all was generally as it was left at 11.30pm the previous evening. At around 7.45am the first of the Trade Stands, not already present on site began arriving and were shown to their places.

As the opening time of 10am got closer so the stress (won’t say panic) increased, as is the same every year. However, this year they seemed a little easier to cope with and we opened smack on time.

The sun shone all day and helped to make a perfect setting for the visitors as they streamed in and were made welcomed by the music of local folk band Eel Pie. At the same time the Clay Pigeon Shoot led by Gary Palmer and his team of helpers got under way at the far end of the site. The Main Arena activities started at 10.45am carrying on until the Show closed, with a range of displays including Security Dogs, Zero Gravity Mountain Bike Stunt team, Falcon Flying, children from Feoffees School and the ever popular Vintage Vehicle Parade.

The Show is growing every year and this year there were 160 Trade Stands and Marquee Stalls, a record number. The marquee was 50’ longer and the Showground moved 50’ further down the field. Another pleasing aspect was the number of local businesses having a stand this year. The cup for the Best Agricultural Stand went to Masstock Smart Farming lead by Mark Taylor and Simon Hobbs. Best Non-Agricultural Stand Trophy went to Head Fen Studios and Marty Savage’s team who are to be congratulated as it was their first attendance.

To allow the visitors to stay the whole day there was a wide range of catering stands offering a great selection of food for all tastes. I think the longest queue all day was at the ice cream van! Second by only by a nose were the Beer Tent and the Traditional tea, sandwiches and cake refreshments, all of which were organised and run by the Pymoor Cricket & Social Club.

For the first time a Free Bus service was provided from Ely via Little Downham to the Showground and I would appreciate any feedback from those who took advantage of the bus for the Committee to decide if it should become a regular feature.

The last act of the Show was in the evening with free entrance to the Social Club to be entertained with live music from Tripwire. Many of the visitors to the Show stayed around and just moved across Pymoor Lane ready to dance the evening away. The Show Committee were easy to spot as they were the ones nodding off in their chairs after a hard day!

At the time of writing, the Committee can confirm there were almost 2500 visitors, the best attendance to date. How much money was made for the charities still has to finalised once all the outstanding incomings and out goings have been sorted.
